SCLERODERMA
The word sclera means hardening and derma means skin. Since this condition is characterized by slowly increasing hardening and scarring of the skin it gets this name. Although not a common condition in Indians. It could lead to many worrying complaints disabling the person for many years with no permanent cure available in modern medicine. The condition usually begins with abnormally high sensitivity of hands and feet to cold .Over the next few years it progresses on to hardening of the skin of the hands and feet. They also develop difficulty in swallowing, weight loss, breathing difficulty and dryness of eyes. The cause of sceroderma is not known. There is a genetic tendency which predisposes one to develop the symptoms when exposed to external environmental toxins such as silica dust, some plastic materials, Rapseed oil etc .Stress which is an internal factor can also aggravate the symptoms. Yoga is known to be very useful in many autoimmune Issuess because of its positive effects on immune system. A bank employee was admitted at our residential yoga therapy campus prashanthi kutiram with all the symptoms of scleroderma. The symptoms of high sensitivity to cold water with a lot of pain reduced with the practice of suryanuloma viloma, kapalabhati and deep relaxation technique within about two weeks. She was free from the severe disabling aain she was getting. After the practices of integrated approach of yoga therapy with understanding of the role of mind in making her life happy and easy ,regular asana, pranayama and meditation she is now free from all symptoms and all medication and is back to her duties. After a year she was able to discontinue all her medicines. It is understood that yoga provides the stability to tolerate environmental changes through several of the cleansing techniques. Shita ushna sukha duhkheshu samah is the definition of yoga according to Bhagavad-Gita. The Recommended Practices in Scleroderma are Ardhakati Chakrasana, Ardhacakrasana, Padhastasana, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Trikonasan, Paschimottanasana, Sarvangasana. Sarvangasana, Vajrasana, Sukhasana, Suryanuloma Viloma Pranayama, Nadisuddhi Pranayama, Bhramari Pranayama. Meditation.

ARDHA UTTHANA KATI ASANA – Twist in Knee Stand

sceroderma1 Starting position: Sit in Vajrasana
  1. While Inhaling come up onto the knees. Exhaling step the right foot forward, so the calf is vertical. Place both hands on the right knee.
  2. Breathing normally balances the body. Inhaling straighten the arms out to the side at shoulder height.
  3. Exhaling twist the upper body slowly to the right, place the left hand on the right knee and the right hand on the left heel. Look over the right shoulder and feel the twist along the spine.
  4. Inhaling bring the body upright and straighten arms to the side. Exhaling lower the arms and return to the starting position.
  5. Concentrate on the muscles at the front of the body and be aware of the movement of breath.
Note : This asana should not be practiced if it creates pain in the back
